We modernise lifts and escalators - new functions bring even greater accessibility

Wiener Linien is continuously modernising lifts and escalators throughout the public transport network to offer our passengers even greater comfort, safety and accessibility. In 2026, we will be renovating 15 lifts and 13 escalators. Wiener Linien is investing around €6.2 million in this project.

Greater accessibility and comfort in the public transport network

Wiener Linien is continuously investing in the renewal of lifts and escalators in the network. In 2026, we will bring 15 lift systems up to the current state of the art after more than 20 years of operation. The new systems meet the highest standards: acoustic announcements for visually impaired people and displays for deaf people ensure an inclusive service.

Wiener Linien is installing new escalators at a number of stations, such as Karlsplatz, Stephansplatz, Handelskai and Floridsdorf. They consume less energy and are even safer thanks to better lighting.

We are renovating the lifts here in 2026:

U6 Tscherttegasse

  • Towards Floridsdorf: Renovation of the platform and installation of an additional lift. Trains will stop at the station again from mid-February, when the new lift will also go into operation.
  • Towards Siebenhirten: Modernisation of the platform and lifts from mid-February. Until summer 2026, the U6 will not be able to stop at the station in this direction.

These people have priority in the lift:

People in wheelchairs, people with prams, visually impaired people, elderly and frail people have priority in lifts because they cannot get around without them.

Please leave the lift for people who really need it!

Liftboy app: Call lifts with your smartphone

With the Liftboy app, you can call all lifts in underground stations using your smartphone. This works contactlessly via Bluetooth, even from a distance of ten to 15 metres. You can also keep the door open longer if you need more time to get on or off.

You can change trains barrier-free at stations with central platforms

The modernisation of a lift system takes an average of eight weeks. During the lift renovation at a station with side platforms, you can still reach the station barrier-free by changing to a train going in the opposite direction at a neighbouring station with a central platform.

Accessibility on Vienna's public transport system

All Vienna underground stations and most tram and bus stops are accessible. Ramps, lifts and raised platforms compensate for the difference in height between the platform and the vehicle. Where barriers still exist, Wiener Linien is removing them step by step in cooperation with the City of Vienna and in consultation with Austrian disability associations.
