Working conditions as a bus driver

As a bus driver you are also on duty at night and on weekends.

We want to be honest: We demand a lot. But we also offer a lot. Our drivers take on a very responsible job that entails some special features:

  • As a bus driver you are also on duty at night and on weekends.
  • Irregular working hours: Your duties are scheduled in alternating shifts. There are also shifts that can be divided by a break of two and a half to four hours ("interruption shifts").
  • Early start: As a driver, you often have to be at work before the start of regular transport operations. The first shifts of the early shift start at 04:30 in the morning. The advantage: In the afternoon you have more time for yourself and your hobbies.
  • Duty at weekends, on public holidays and at night: Your working week extends over five days, followed by two days off. There are also night shifts (Nightline) as well as shifts on weekends and public holidays.
  • Please note: After your training, you will work on Saturdays and Sundays for a longer period of time.
  • Changing duty stations and always on the road: In principle, your duty station can be located anywhere in the city and can also change. The reason for this is that we have to allocate services according to need. When assigning duties, we make sure as much as possible that your place of residence is included in the schedule. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to take your wishes into account.

Our bus garages and break relief points:

  • Garage Rax: Sahulkastraße 2, 1100 Vienna; parking lot Siebenhirten, 1230 Vienna.
  • Garage Spetterbrücke: Paltaufgasse 2, 1160 Vienna

  • Our break release points are located throughout the city.

What our colleagues say: "You should not take the training lightly. But if you are willing to learn, you can do it!"

We prepare you thoroughly for your assignment. Regardless of whether you already have experience in driving buses or do not even have a D driving licence yet: If we decide to hire you, you will receive comprehensive training at the beginning of your employment. If you don't have a D licence yet, you will obtain the driving licence for class D95 as part of your training with us. In any case, we will prepare you in the best possible way for your work as a bus driver with Wiener Linien!

Key data of the training:

  • The training, including obtaining the D95 driver's licence, takes about three months. If you already have a D licence, the training takes about two months.
  • You will already receive a salary during the training.
  • Course hours: Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 15:00 (deviations are possible).
  • Please note: The training trips take place in regular shifts. This means also during the night hours.

Contents of the training:

  • Driving licence training including theoretical and practical examination **
  • Basic qualification (D95) including theoretical test **
  • Tickets and season tickets (ticketing) including examination
  • Service and operating regulations
  • Network and route knowledge
  • Vehicle technology and types

Completion: Theoretical and practical examinations

Your current level of knowledge will be continuously checked during the training through intermediate tests and oral repetitions. Please note: During the training you will also have to learn a lot of theory. Experience has shown that a special ambition and a certain willingness to learn, even in your free time, are necessary to successfully complete the training. If you do not complete the training with a positive result, you will unfortunately not be able to start working for Wiener Linien as a driver. The employment relationship will then be terminated.

Your way into the driving service: application and selection procedure

You would like to become a bus driver for Wiener Linien? Then please apply online. You can go to the job portal right here or find the link at the top and at the bottom of the page.

After your application, the selection procedure will proceed as follows: If we are convinced by your application, we will invite you to a test in which we will check your general knowledge, comprehension, accuracy and driving-related knowledge. You will also receive learning materials from us in advance. We will also prepare you for the medical examination (urine test).
