Underground modernisation in the first quarter of 2026

U3 Gasometer 🚧 Construction of new station entrances

Wiener Linien is expanding the U3 Gasometer station with two new, barrier-free entrances. Both platforms will have additional access points with stairs and lifts. Construction work began in April 2025 and has no impact on underground operations. From 2027, passengers will be able to conveniently reach the Gasometer station via Medwedweg and Nussbaumallee in addition to the existing exit.

U6 Tscherttegasse 🚧 February to May: Platform closed in the direction of Siebenhirten

From April 2025 to May 2026, Wiener Linien will be modernising the 30-year-old Tscherttegasse U6 station, which has only been partially accessible to date. The station will be extensively expanded and will receive an additional lift, making it even more accessible. During the works, trains will only stop at the station in one direction.

🚧 Restriction from 2 February to 29 May (start of operations): no stops in the direction of Siebenhirten

The platform in the direction of Siebenhirten is closed due to modernisation and renovation works.

➡️ Alternative: use a train travelling in the other direction

To reach the U6 station Tscherttegasse in the direction of Siebenhirten, travel to the station Am Schöpfwerk, change there to a train travelling in the opposite direction and travel one stop to Tscherttegasse. You should allow five to ten minutes extra for this.

If you want to travel from the U6 station Tscherttegasse in the direction of Siebenhirten, take a train in the direction of Floridsdorf, travel one stop to Bahnhof Meidling and change there to a train in the direction of Siebenhirten. You should allow an extra five to ten minutes for this.

  • U1 tunnel in the Favoritenstraße area
  • U4 tunnel in the Naschmarkt/Rechte Wienzeile area
  • USTRAB (underground tram) in the Margaretengürtel/Landgutgasse area

In 2025, Wiener Linien renewed the tracks of line 18 in the third district, redesigned streets and stops, and added greenery. Since 19 December 2025, line 18 has been running again to the Schlachthausgasse U3 station. Minor remaining work will continue in the third district until June 2026.

✅ Completed: Schloßhofer Straße and Hoßplatz (lines 25, 26, 27)

From the beginning of August until December, Wiener Linien renewed a 1,300-metre section of track on Schloßhofer Straße between Hoßplatz and Franz-Jonas-Platz. The work was carried out mainly at night and during non-operating hours. This allowed regular service on tram lines 25, 26, and 27 to continue without interruption.

✅ Completed: Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse (line 49)

During the autumn holidays, Wiener Linien have renovated the tracks on line 49 in the Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse area.

Underground modernisation 2025

🚧 U6: Modernisation of Tscherttegasse station (until summer 2026)

From April 2025 to summer 2026, Wiener Linien will be modernising the 30-year-old Tscherttegasse U6 station, which was previously only partially accessible. The station will be extensively extended and will have an additional lift, making it even more accessible. During the work, the station will run in one direction at a time.

Restriction from 12 May to the end of January 2026: Trains in the direction of Floridsdorf will not stop at Tscherttegasse station

Track 1 is out of service. Trains travelling in the direction of Floridsdorf will not stop at Tscherttegasse station.

Alternative:

  • To reach the Tscherttegasse U6 station in the direction of Floridsdorf, travel to Meidling station and change there to a train travelling in the opposite direction. You should allow an extra five to ten minutes for this.
  • If you want to travel from the Tscherttegasse U6 station in the direction of Floridsdorf, take a train in the opposite direction, travel one stop to Am Schöpfwerk and change there to a train travelling in the direction of Floridsdorf.

✅ Completed: U4 Landstraße: platform renovation

Wiener Linien have extensively modernised the U4 platform at Landstraße station.

✅ Completed: U6: Installation of new points between Spittelau and Jägerstraße

During the autumn holidays, Wiener Linien have replaced points between Spittelau and Jägerstraße.

✅ Completed: U4: Renovation of the tunnel between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke

During the summer holidays, Wiener Linien has extensively renovated the tunnel ceiling of the U4 between Friedensbrücke and Schottenring.

✅ Completed: U1 Kagran: Refurbishment of the platform in the direction Oberlaa

At Kagran station, we are modernizing the foundation and surface of the platform in the direction of Oberlaa. Thanks to the good weather conditions and the efficient organization of the construction phases, Wiener Linien is able to complete the construction work three weeks earlier than planned. Kagran station will therefore be fully operational again from May 30.

Restriction from February 10 up to and including May 29, 2025: no stop in Kagran in the direction of Oberlaa

The U1 only stops in Kagran in the direction of Leopoldau.

Alternative:

Take the U1 in the direction of Oberlaa to Alte Donau station, get on a train in the opposite direction and travel back to Kagran. Please allow an extra ten minutes for this.

✅ Completed: U4 Friedensbrücke: Reconstruction of the underground bridge over the Alserbach

We are continuing with the reconstruction of the underground Alserbach bridge: from January to the end of May, we are renewing the supporting structure under track 2. As last year, the U4 can run continuously between Hütteldorf and Heiligenstadt despite the construction work.

Restriction from 13 January up to and including 25 February 2025: Track 2 closed

At Friedensbrücke station, the U4 will run on track 1 in both directions (alternating track operation). Only every second train runs beyond Schwedenplatz to Heiligenstadt. This results in a slightly longer interval in this section.

✅ Completed: U1 Keplerplatz: Installation of new points

During the Easter holidays Wiener Linien will be installing new points for the U1 in the Keplerplatz area.

Restriction from 12 to 21 April 2025 inclusive: no service between Südtiroler Platz/Hauptbahnhof (main station) and Reumannplatz

During this work, the U1 will not be able to run between Südtiroler Platz/Hauptbahnhof (main station) and Reumannplatz. The U1 is divided during this period: It will run between Leopoldau and Südtiroler Platz/Hauptbahnhof (main station) and between Oberlaa and Reumannplatz.

Alternatives: Lines E1 and 6

  • As a replacement, tram line E1 runs at 5-minute intervals between Reumannplatz and Quartier Belvedere during the day.
  • Line 6 will also take passengers from the 10th and 11th districts to the Margaretengürtel U4 station at shorter 4-minute intervals during the Easter holidays.

✅ Completed: U6: Installation of new points between Spittelau and Jägerstraße

During the semester break, we replaced the points on the U6 between Spittelau and Jägerstraße.

The Vienna public transport network needs both: network expansion and infrastructure modernisation.

An efficient public transport network needs both expansion and ongoing maintenance. Here on our website, you find information about the expansion of the public transport network and about the modernisation of our infrastructure.

We are increasingly focusing on large-scale renovations

We carry out most track construction work during non-operating hours (that is, at night), during holidays or even during ongoing operations. This allows us to avoid restrictions for passengers, but we can only achieve selective improvements. In contrast, large construction sites, which we implement together with other departments of the City of Vienna, are much more effective: public transport passengers enjoy noticeable improvements, and residents only have to put up with a construction site on their doorstep once. A large construction site may cause short-term restrictions, but it means that an entire section of road is made fit for the next few decades.

Some modernisation work necessitates changes to timetables. You can find the current timetables here.
