Construction sites and service restrictions
We are increasingly focussing on large-scale renovations
Why? Because we achieve more with one large construction site than with several smaller measures. Public transport passengers get noticeable improvements, while neighbours only have to deal with one construction site.
Why not just do it at night? We carry out most track construction work during non-operational times (i.e. at night), during the holidays or even during ongoing operations. In this way, we avoid restrictions for passengers, but can only achieve selective improvements. In contrast, large-scale construction sites, which we realise together with other departments of the City of Vienna, are much more effective. A major construction site may cause short-term restrictions, but in return an entire section of road is made fit for the coming decades.
Current timetables
Some modernisation work requires changes to timetables. You can always find the most up-to-date timetables here:
Underground modernisation projects 2025
🚧 U4: Renovation of the tunnel between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke
During the summer holidays, Wiener Linien is extensively renovating the tunnel ceiling of the U4 between Friedensbrücke and Schottenring. During the work, the U4 cannot run in this area.
Restriction from 28 June to 31 August 2025 inclusive: U4 line divided, no service between Friedensbrücke and Schottenring
The U4 runs between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke and between Schottenring and Hütteldorf.
Alternatives:
- Tram line E4: The replacement tram runs between Schottenring and Heiligenstadt and thus parallel to the U4.
- Line D: Together with the E4, Line D provides two replacement tram lines.
🚧 U6: More accessibility and comfort for Tscherttegasse station
From April 2025 to summer 2026, Wiener Linien will be modernising the 30-year-old Tscherttegasse U6 station, which was previously only partially accessible. The station will be extensively extended and will have an additional lift, making it even more accessible. During the work, the station will run in one direction at a time.
Restriction from 12 May to December 2025: Trains in the direction of Floridsdorf will not stop at Tscherttegasse station
Track 1 is out of service. Trains travelling in the direction of Floridsdorf will not stop at Tscherttegasse station.
Alternative:
- To reach the Tscherttegasse U6 station in the direction of Floridsdorf, travel to Meidling station and change there to a train travelling in the opposite direction. You should allow an extra five to ten minutes for this.
- If you want to travel from the Tscherttegasse U6 station in the direction of Floridsdorf, take a train in the opposite direction, travel one stop to Am Schöpfwerk and change there to a train travelling in the direction of Floridsdorf.
✅ Completed: U1 Kagran: Refurbishment of the platform in the direction Oberlaa
At Kagran station, we are modernizing the foundation and surface of the platform in the direction of Oberlaa. Thanks to the good weather conditions and the efficient organization of the construction phases, Wiener Linien is able to complete the construction work three weeks earlier than planned. Kagran station will therefore be fully operational again from May 30.
Restriction from February 10 up to and including May 29, 2025: no stop in Kagran in the direction of Oberlaa
The U1 only stops in Kagran in the direction of Leopoldau.
Alternative:
Take the U1 in the direction of Oberlaa to Alte Donau station, get on a train in the opposite direction and travel back to Kagran. Please allow an extra ten minutes for this.
✅ Completed: U4 Friedensbrücke: Reconstruction of the underground bridge over the Alserbach
We are continuing with the reconstruction of the underground Alserbach bridge: from January to the end of May, we are renewing the supporting structure under track 2. As last year, the U4 can run continuously between Hütteldorf and Heiligenstadt despite the construction work.
Restriction from 13 January up to and including 25 February 2025: Track 2 closed
At Friedensbrücke station, the U4 will run on track 1 in both directions (alternating track operation). Only every second train runs beyond Schwedenplatz to Heiligenstadt. This results in a slightly longer interval in this section.
✅ Completed: U1 Keplerplatz: Installation of new points
During the Easter holidays Wiener Linien will be installing new points for the U1 in the Keplerplatz area.
Restriction from 12 to 21 April 2025 inclusive: no service between Südtiroler Platz/Hauptbahnhof (main station) and Reumannplatz
During this work, the U1 will not be able to run between Südtiroler Platz/Hauptbahnhof (main station) and Reumannplatz. The U1 is divided during this period: It will run between Leopoldau and Südtiroler Platz/Hauptbahnhof (main station) and between Oberlaa and Reumannplatz.
Alternatives: Lines E1 and 6
- As a replacement, tram line E1 runs at 5-minute intervals between Reumannplatz and Quartier Belvedere during the day.
- Line 6 will also take passengers from the 10th and 11th districts to the Margaretengürtel U4 station at shorter 4-minute intervals during the Easter holidays.
✅ Completed: U6: Installation of new points between Spittelau and Jägerstraße
During the semester break, we replaced the points on the U6 between Spittelau and Jägerstraße.

🚧 Landstraßer Hauptstraße, Schlachthausgasse (1030 Vienna): new tracks for line 18
Line 18 will receive a total of 2.4 kilometres of new tracks on Landstraßer Hauptstraße and Schlachthausgasse. The extensive work will require diversions and line closures.
Line 18 suspended until the end of August, line 62 takes over section (rerouted)
- Line 18 will be suspended from July to the end of August due to construction work in the third district and simultaneous work on Margaretengürtel.
- Line 62 will run as a replacement to Fasangasse and continue rerouted via the O line route and via the Rennweg and Landstraße U S-Bahn stations to the Matthäusgasse terminus. This will allow passengers to transfer to lines U3, 71, 74A, 77A and the S7.
- In addition to the existing public transport services, replacement bus 71E will run from Karlsplatz via the Rennweg S-Bahn station to St. Marx.
View information sheet: Lines 74A, N74 (PDF)
Track construction work is expected to take place in the Schlachthausgasse U area between Markhofgasse and Schnirchgasse from July onwards.
End of August: Line 18 back in service
From the end of August, line 18 will run again on the diversion route to Matthäusgasse. From September, the 18 will be able to run to St. Marx again.
🚧 Margaretengürtel: new tracks for lines 6, 18
We are renewing the tracks on the Margaretengürtel in July and August. Lines 6 & 18 will therefore not be able to run between Burggasse, Stadthalle and Eichenstraße. The replacement bus 6E will be travelling instead.
Restrictions from 7 July up to and including 22 August 2025: Line 6 diverted, line 18 discontinued
- Line 6 diverted: Line 6 cannot run between Burggasse, Stadthalle and Eichenstraße. It is diverted from Eichenstraße to Meidling station. The replacement bus 6E is travelling as a substitute.
- Line 18 cancelled: Line 18 is also cancelled between Burggasse, Stadthalle and Eichenstraße. As track construction work is taking place on line 18 in St. Marx at the same time, line 18 is cancelled.
- Line 62 diverted: Line 62 will run to Matthäusgasse as a replacement for line 18.

🚧 Jörgerstraße (1170 Vienna): new tracks for line 43
From mid-June to September, we will be renewing the tracks on line 43 in Jörgerstraße. Line 43 will therefore be diverted.
Restriction from 16 June up to and including 31 August 2025: Line 43 diverted
The 43 runs on its usual route between Neuwaldegg and Elterleinplatz. From Elterleinplatz, line 43 will be diverted via the route of line 9 to Gersthof. This means that passengers can change to line 42 at Kreuzgasse and get to the city centre. During the construction work, line 9 will only run between Westbahnhof and Rosensteingasse (short route to Rosensteingasse).
Alternatives:
- Line 42: Due to the diversion of line 43, lines 42 and 43 are connected at the Vinzenzgasse stop. This means that passengers can reach the city centre or the U6 or Neuwaldegg with just one change.
- Lines 2 and 44: Lines 2 and 44 run on their usual route with more frequent intervals and take passengers to the city centre and back again.

✅ Completed: Track renewal at Franz Jonas Platz and Schloßhofer Straße (lines 25, 26, 31)
Wiener Linien replaced 1,780 metres of track in Floridsdorf. Due to simultaneous work being carried out by ÖBB on the S-Bahn main line, Wiener Linien carried out most of its work during non-operational hours.
