Modernisation and service changes

However, such extensive modernisation is not possible without service changes or restrictions. Find out here when and where you can expect service changes.

Modernisation of Ă–BB S-Bahn main line between Floridsdorf and Praterstern (July, August)

The Austrian Federal Railway company Ă–BB is modernising lines, structures and rail infrastructure in and around Vienna. During the summer holidays, the S-Bahn cannot run between Floridsdorf and Praterstern.

100 construction sites, only a quarter have an impact on operations

Wiener Linien will be using hammers, drills and excavator shovels at a total of 100 locations in 2024. Our passengers will notice little or nothing of most of the modernisation work. This is because, where possible, we work during non-operating times or plan the work in such a way that it does not affect ongoing operations. Only a quarter of the measures have a noticeable impact on public transport operations.

Some of the extensive modernisation measures, such as large-scale track replacements, substructure renewals or tunnel girder renovations, are only possible when operations are interrupted. For reasons of efficiency and economy, it is necessary to divide, reroute or short-circuit lines. The complete cancellation of a line is the absolute exception.

Construction planning: close coordination with the City of Vienna

Wiener Linien works closely with the departments of the City of Vienna in construction planning. This means that necessary earthworks such as sewer renovation or district heating connections can be carried out at the same time as track construction work. Where possible, Wiener Linien's construction work is also combined with a redesign of the surface or vice versa. Examples of this are the modernisation work on the tunnel ceiling in PraterstraĂźe and the renewal of the tracks in Wiedner HauptstraĂźe. This significantly increases the added value of the modernisation measures.

S-Bahn Vienna Upgrade: Ă–BB S-Bahn between Floridsdorf and Praterstern closed in July and August

The main Ă–BB S-Bahn line between Vienna Meidling and Vienna Floridsdorf was opened in 1962, over 60 years ago. Today, around 700 trains run here every day and the line has reached its capacity limit. To ensure that local and regional public transport between Vienna and Lower Austria remains punctual and reliable in the long term, Ă–BB has launched the S-Bahn Vienna upgrade.

The upgrade centres on the renewal of the rail infrastructure, the construction of new stabling and turning facilities, the extension of platforms and the conversion to the digital S-Bahn. The work for the Vienna S-Bahn upgrade will be carried out between autumn 2023 and December 2027. Work that cannot be carried out while the railway is still in operation will be bundled in order to implement it as quickly and efficiently as possible.
