Back to school with more frequent services and new connections

There are several changes to the Wiener Linien network at the start of the new school year: The extended line 18 now runs to Stadion U2 station, city bus routes 2A and 3A have new routes, and more frequent services on several underground and tram lines provide additional capacity. Bus services around the new line 18 have also been reorganised.

Line 18 runs to Stadion U2 station from 5 September

The extended line 18 will start operating in time for the beginning of the school year. From 5 September, line 18 will run every 6 minutes from Burggasse-Stadthalle U6 station via Westbahnhof, Vienna Central Station, St. Marx and Schlachthausgasse U3 station to Stadion U2 station. Seven new stops have been built along the new 3.1-kilometre section through the Prater. Line 18 offers connections to all underground lines and provides an important alternative to ÖBB S-Bahn services in eastern Vienna.

New bus network around line 18

With the extension of line 18, bus services around Stadion, Schlachthausgasse and Neu Marx will also be reorganised from 5 September. Line 18 will take over the current 77A connection between Schlachthausgasse and Stadion:

  • Bus 77A will run from Rennweg via Schlachthausgasse to Neu Marx and will take over the current 80A route from Schlachthausgasse onwards. Between Rennweg and Neu Marx, it will operate daily from around 5:00 am to 12:30 am.
  • The new bus 78A will run between Lusthaus and Stadion.
  • Bus 80A will run more frequently between Praterstern and Schlachthausgasse.

Lines 40 and 41 run more frequently

From 7 September, passengers in Währing will also benefit from shorter waiting times. Line 40 will run every 7.5 minutes instead of every 10 minutes during the day from Monday to Friday. During the morning peak, it will run every 6 minutes instead of every 7.5 minutes.

Line 41 will also run more frequently: On weekdays, it will run every 4 to 5 minutes instead of every 7.5 to 10 minutes during peak hours, and every 6 to 7.5 minutes instead of every 10 minutes during the day.

Good to know: “Ring, Volkstheater U” is now called “Parliament, U Volkstheater”

There is another change on the Ring: The former “Ring, Volkstheater U” stop was renamed “Parlament, U Volkstheater” at the end of August. This follows the closure of the Parlament stop in July. The stop was also part of the “More Speed for Buses and Trams” initiative: Removing it allows lines 1, 2, 71 and D to travel more quickly along the Ring. The neighbouring stops are only around 200 metres away and are used much more frequently.

Faster services! Line O speeds up and more frequent services during the ÖBB S-Bahn closure

As an important alternative route during the closure of the S-Bahn main line, line O will run even faster thanks to several measures introduced as part of the ‘Mehr Tempo für Bus und Bim‘ programme: A new traffic light system at Landstraßer Gürtel/Fasangasse reduces waiting times, while adjusted parking markings in Radetzkystraße are intended to prevent delays caused by poorly parked vehicles. In Ungargasse, a new parking restriction separates car traffic from the tram tracks earlier. Until now, trams have lost up to one and a half minutes there.

From 7 September, several lines will also run more frequently: During peak hours, the U1 will run every 2 minutes 20 seconds, the U2 every 3 minutes 20 seconds, the U4 approximately every 3 to 3 minutes 20 seconds and the U6 every 2 minutes 40 seconds. An additional standby train will also be available on the U6 during the morning peak.

During the closure of the S-Bahn main line, line O will run exclusively with longer trams at 5-minute intervals. Line 62 will also run every 7.5 minutes and will be rerouted via Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Vienna Central Station to Quartier Belvedere. Together with the extension of line 18, these measures will provide passengers with significant additional capacity across Vienna’s public transport network.

City buses will run beyond the city centre from 7 September

From 7 September, lines 2A and 3A will operate on new routes. This will create new direct connections between the city centre and neighbouring districts, provide better connections to residential areas and make services more reliable. The new routes will also separate the bus lines from popular horse-drawn carriage routes, helping to prevent delays.
