On the move together - with consideration and respect

Speakerphone calls. Music without headphones. The last bite of garlic pizza on the subway. What may not bother some can quickly become unpleasant for others. Millions of people share Vienna’s public transport every day. A little consideration goes a long way: keep the volume down, take off your backpack, keep dogs safely secured and enjoy your snacks outside. Because Vienna’s best travelling community knows how to ride together. Thank you for doing your part.

Loud phone calls don’t make the journey better

We’ve all experienced it: exciting news that simply has to be shared with the entire carriage. But the truth is, not everything is meant for a public audience. Being considerate means keeping phone calls brief and quiet – or saving them for later. Music and videos should always be enjoyed with headphones.

Strong-smelling food can quickly become unpleasant

A single underground train can carry up to 900 passengers at a time. Strong-smelling food or alcohol can quickly make the journey unpleasant for others. If you’re hungry, enjoy your meal after your trip – and if you’d like to raise a toast, there’s surely a more suitable place.

Dogs travel safely with a leash and muzzle

For a relaxed and safe journey for everyone - on two legs or four - dogs are required to wear a leash and a properly fitted muzzle on public transport. Clear rules create reassurance and help ensure all passengers feel at ease.

Backpacks belong between your feet during rush hour

During peak times, a backpack on your back or on an empty seat quickly becomes an obstacle. It takes up valuable space, bumps into others and slows down boarding and alighting. Taking it off and placing it between your feet is a simple step that makes the ride smoother for everyone.

Song Lyrics in English:

"I step on the number six tram in the morning rush,
Someone’s phone on speaker, talking way too much.
“Hey, wait a second, I’ve got news for you!”
And the whole tram hears every word they do...

You know that girl from the second floor?
She’s seeing the guy from apartment four!”
My girlfriend laughs so loud on the line
But nobody here seems to mind.

No shame, no shame, nothing’s too much for me,
Driving the tram and the subway crazy.
I spread out wide, I’m loud, I don’t care
Taking my ride through Vienna out there.

Morning rush hour, people everywhere,
Half the city’s waiting on the platform there.
I push right in with my backpack on
Taking it off? That thought is gone.

They say breakfast starts a perfect day,
So I eat my sandwich on the subway.
And that smell filling up the train
Leberkäse roll again!

No shame, no shame, nothing’s too much for me,
Driving the tram and the subway crazy.
I spread out wide, I’m loud, I don’t care
Taking my ride through Vienna out there."

Our staff help keep things running smoothly

Wiener Linien’s security and service teams are on duty every day - in stations and on vehicles - with a keen sense of what the situation calls for. They provide guidance, answer questions and step in when needed, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Sometimes it’s a friendly reminder, sometimes a reassuring presence - often simply being there at the right moment. A little consideration makes their work easier, the journey more pleasant and helps us all arrive safely.

Consideration and respect keep Vienna moving

This campaign for greater consideration and respect on public transport is a vital contribution to a liveable Vienna. Public transport is the backbone of the city – connecting people and keeping daily life in motion. For this system to work, modern infrastructure alone is not enough. It also requires empathy, awareness and mutual respect. Every small act of consideration strengthens our community and makes each journey more enjoyable. Mobility is more than getting from A to B – it is shared experience and shared responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Yes, annual pass holders even take their dog free of charge.

Small dogs transported in a closed container always travel for free. The container primarily serves the safety of the dog. Assistance dogs (guide dogs for the blind, service dogs, signal dogs) with a valid entry in the passenger's disability pass also travel for free.

Every dog that is not transported in a closed container is subject to the muzzle and leash requirement. Assistance dogs with a valid entry in the disability pass do not require a leash or muzzle.

Since small dogs can be overlooked, they should be transported in a closed container. Dogs can easily get injured on an escalator. Therefore, we recommend using stairs or an elevator instead.

Before entering the underground station, a muzzle and leash must be put on. This rule also applies to the elevators leading to the stations.

Bus and tram stops are not subject to this requirement. Before boarding the vehicle, a muzzle and leash must be put on.

In general, there are many different sizes of muzzles available. If a suitable muzzle cannot be found, it is also possible to have a muzzle custom-made. Dogs may be transported without a muzzle if they are in a closed container.

For a single journey, dogs require a half-price ticket, which is a discounted ticket. If multiple journeys are planned, our time tickets (such as weekly or monthly passes) can also be purchased. Holders of annual passes may bring a dog for free.

When purchasing a WienMobil ticket, the name of the accompanying passenger must be entered.
