Since 1 September: New line 12 strengthens Vienna's tram network

Construction work on the new tram line 12 and the 2.2-kilometre-long new section in the second district has been completed. Just in time for the start of the school year on Monday, 1 September, the new line 12 runs from the U6 Josefstädter Straße to Hillerstraße in the second district. It creates a new axis through the city and many transfer options to the underground and suburban railway, benefiting around 250,000 residents along the entire route.

New public transport axis through four districts shortens travel times and creates new connections

Since 1 September, line 12 is running from U6 Josefstädter Straße via Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and U4 Friedensbrücke, U6 Jägerstraße and U6 Dresdner Straße to the Traisengasse S-Bahn station and on via Nordbahnviertel and U1 Vorgartenstraße to the Hillerstraße terminus.

The new line 12 connects four districts of Vienna (2nd, 8th, 9th, 20th) and offers connections to the underground (U1, U4, U6) at five stops and to the S-Bahn at two stops. In the future, the 12 will also be connected to the U5 at Arne-Karlsson-Park in the ninth district. Of a total of 25 stops along the entire line 12, five new stops were built on the 2.2-kilometre-long new section in the second district.

Around 250,000 residents along the entire route benefit from the high-performance public transport connection, which makes workplaces, schools and shopping facilities even more accessible by public transport and ensures shorter travel times. The new line 12 reduces the journey time from the Nordbahnviertel to the U6 Dresdner Straße from around ten to 14 minutes to seven minutes, and the journey to the Donauzentrum will take 11 minutes instead of the previous 18 minutes. During peak hours, the 12 runs approximately every 8 minutes.

Better public transport connections for 25,000 residents in the Nordbahnviertel district

The launch of Line 12 will expand Vienna's public transport network and make it more efficient. For example, the Nordbahnviertel district will have even better public transport connections thanks to the new Bruno-Marek-Allee double stop (Line O) and the Haussteinstraße stop. Residents will now have direct access to lines U1, U4, U6, the S-Bahn and other tram and bus lines. This will also benefit the many new residents who have moved to the Nordbahnviertel since construction of line 12 began in summer 2024. A total of approximately 22,700 people currently live there. Around 1,000 apartments for a further 2,300 residents are still to be built – when completed, 25,000 people will live here and benefit from Line 12.

Bus line 11B will be integrated into the timetable of line 11A

Bus services in the second district will also be adjusted with the launch of line 12: from 1 September, the journeys of line 11B will be integrated into the timetable of line 11A. Line 11A will thus receive additional buses in the central section from Monday to Saturday. Due to the redesign of the road space, these buses will be extended and will run from Friedrich-Engels-Platz to Elderschplatz. This means that passengers will no longer have to consult two different timetables to find out when the next bus is coming.

Climate-friendly redesign: 100 new trees and over two kilometres of cycle paths

Line 12 makes an important contribution to the City of Vienna's climate targets. By shifting car journeys to public transport, up to 650 tonnes of CO₂ can be saved annually. At the same time, the surface along the new route has been comprehensively redesigned: 100 newly planted trees in the 2nd district provide cooling and shade on hot summer days. On the section between Haussteinstraße and Walcherstraße, Line 12 runs on a green track for around 230 metres, which is a plus for the microclimate.

Over two kilometres of new cycle paths create more space, quality and safety for cyclists. Particular highlights are the new two-way cycle path on Taborstraße, the new one-way cycle paths on Vorgartenstraße and the connection to the Mega-Rad-Highway on Lassallestraße. A wide new cycle path has also been built on Nordbahnstraße, complementing the existing one.
