U4: Comprehensive modernisation in the final phase

Under the title NEU4, the City of Vienna and Wiener Linien are investing over 300 million euros in the comprehensive modernisation of the U4 underground line. The work is already in the final phase.

Largest modernisation project in the history of the Vienna underground

The U4 is Vienna's oldest underground line. Parts of its infrastructure are over 100 years old and date back to the old Stadtbahn railway. Since 2014, we have been extensively renovating and modernising the U4 and making it fit for the future. Wiener Linien is focusing on measures that will sustainably modernise the U4 for decades to come. Tunnel girder renewals are designed to last for the next 100 years. Additional track connections are being created, which will enable the U4 to change tracks in the event of disruptions and thus ensure more reliable operation. In order not to disrupt operations, Wiener Linien is working mainly during non-operating hours, i.e. at night. For ten years, we have been working almost every night to make the U4 even more reliable for you.

The modernisation of the U4 (NEU4) is the most comprehensive modernisation project in the history of the Vienna underground. As part of the NEU4 project, Wiener Linien has replaced signal boxes, renewed the tracks and track substructure, refurbished stations and tunnel ceilings and installed additional track connections. The U4 modernisation is already in the final phase. Wiener Linien is now carrying out track construction work and work on the surface. Not all measures have an impact on the operation of the U4 line.

2021 to 2024

The final phases of the project to modernise the U4 will be completed in 2024. The work carried out during this phase will have little impact on normal U4 operations. Other station buildings will be modernised, escalators replaced, tunnel linings renovated and track connections installed.

2020

  • March and April: Modernization of the surface at Friedensbrücke (no restrictions for U4 passengers)
  • Easter 2020: Laying of new turnouts between Karlsplatz and Längenfeldgasse
  • Refurbishment of the tunnel building between Schwedenplatz and Schottenring
  • Installation of new track connections and turnouts between Heiligenstadt and Schottenring and between Landstrasse and Karlsplatz

2019

  • February 2019 until 31 January 2020: Closure of the Pilgramgasse station due to construction work for the U2 extension. For more information download the folder.
  • July and August: Closure between Längenfeldgasse and Karlsplatz due to complete modernisation of tracks and track foundations
  • Installation of new track connections between Margareten Gürtel and Pilgramgasse, as well as Kettenbrückengasse and Karlsplatz

2017 and 2018

  • Spring 2017: Installation of new track connections on the northern section of the U4, with limited weekend services
  • Modernisation of the interlockings at Karlsplatz, Schottenring and Wasserleitungswiese
  • General renovation of the Roßauer Lände and Friedensbrücke stations
  • Summer 2018: Modernisation of turnouts and track systems around Heiligenstadt

2016

  • May to September: Closure between Hütteldorf and Hietzing due to complete modernisation of tracks and track foundations
  • July and August: Closure between Hütteldorf and Schönbrunn due to modernisation of tracks and track foundations
  • Completion of work to modernise the Hütteldorf and Meidling Hauptstraße signal boxes
  • Installation of new track connections between Unter St. Veit and Ober St. Veit, Hietzing and Braunschweiggasse, as well as at the Schönbrunn station
  • Essential improvement work is carried out at the Ober St. Veit, Unter St. Veit, Braunschweiggasse, Hietzing and Schönbrunn stations
  • Renovation of the tunnel structure between Schwedenplatz and Schottenring

2015

  • Modernisation of the Hütteldorf and Meidling Hauptstraße signal boxes
  • Renovation of the Hütteldorf station
  • Start of work to renovate the Stadtpark station
  • Start of work to renovate the supporting wall between Ober St. Veit and Karlsplatz
