Final stretch for Vienna’s summer construction works

These lines will return to normal service in August

• From 17 August, tram line 31 will once again run between Schottenring and Stammersdorf.
• From 22 August, ten lines will return to their regular routes. Tram lines 5, 12, 37, 38, 40, 41 and 42 will once again run through the newly refurbished junction at Spitalgasse/Währinger Straße/Nußdorfer Straße. Tram lines D, 1 and 71 will also return to Universitätsring, running on newly laid tracks.
• From 29 August, tram line 43 will once again run on its regular route to Neuwaldegg as track works in Hernals reach the final stage.
• From 31 August, the U3 will once again run continuously between Ottakring and Simmering.
• The U4 has already been back in full service since 3 August. The new track connection provides greater operational flexibility and will help keep services running smoothly, particularly during the closure of the ÖBB S-Bahn main line from autumn onwards.

Investing in a reliable public transport network

Every day, Wiener Linien gets more than 2 million people where they need to go safely and reliably. To make sure Vienna’s public transport network continues to perform well in the years ahead, Wiener Linien regularly invests in maintaining and upgrading its infrastructure.

Tracks and points typically last between 10 and 45 years, depending on how heavily they are used. Busy sections, curves and areas around stops need to be renewed more frequently.

As part of the “Netz erst recht!” modernisation programme, Wiener Linien is renewing a total of 12.5 kilometres of track and 33 sets of points in 2026. Passengers will benefit from greater comfort, more reliable services and a strong public transport network for decades to come.

The city’s summer roadworks are also progressing well

Work on the Floridsdorfer Brücke is moving ahead quickly. The access ramp to the A22 from the 20th district was therefore able to reopen on 8 August, earlier than originally planned. This is an important first step towards easing traffic in the area. The remaining restrictions will stay in place until the end of the school holidays.

From 18 August, traffic arrangements will change at the junction of Brünner Straße, Lundenburger Gasse and Shuttleworthstraße. Drivers approaching from Brünner Straße will only be able to continue straight ahead or turn right in either direction. Drivers approaching from Lundenburger Gasse or Shuttleworthstraße will only be able to turn right.

Traffic conditions on Margaretengürtel will also improve by the end of the school holidays. The main carriageways will once again be fully open once most of the work on the U-STRAB underground tram infrastructure and the annual repairs to damaged concrete sections have been completed. In September, waterproofing work on the U-STRAB will continue in Kliebergasse and along the Gürtel side roads.

Coordinated works help keep disruption to a minimum

Instead of carrying out a series of smaller projects one after another, the City of Vienna and Wiener Linien coordinate works wherever possible. This means tracks, points and other infrastructure can be renewed at the same time.

Bundling the works in this way helps shorten construction periods and keeps disruption for passengers and local residents to a minimum.
