Together on the move: New fares from 1 January 2027

Around 2.5 million people travel with Wiener Linien every day. To ensure that our passengers continue to reach their destinations safely, reliably and comfortably in the future, we continuously invest in public transport services, from modern vehicles and infrastructure maintenance to network expansion and complementary mobility services.

To ensure this high-quality service in the long term, Wiener Linien fares will be adjusted as of 1 January 2027. This adjustment will be made for the first time under the annual indexation mechanism announced in 2025, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). For 2027, the adjustment amounts to 3.45%.

The benefit: fares will now be aligned regularly with general price developments. This creates greater predictability for both passengers and Wiener Linien and helps avoid larger fare increases in the future.

Explore all of Vienna by public transport for just €1.32 per day

The annual pass remains one of the city’s most attractive mobility offers. From 1 January 2027, it will cost €483.10 when paid in a single instalment. That works out to just €1.32 per day. For comparison: with €1.32, you can drive around Vienna’s Ringstraße only about twice by car. With an annual pass, however, passengers can travel flexibly throughout Vienna for an entire day.

The Youth, Senior and Special Annual Passes will cost €310.40, which is only around €0.85 per day. A single journey will cost €3.10 when purchased digitally and €3.30 in paper form.

Did you know? Digital tickets are cheaper

Passengers who purchase tickets digitally will continue to benefit from lower prices. Short-term tickets and single tickets purchased via the WienMobil Ticket Shop cost around 5% less than paper tickets. At the same time, digital tickets help reduce paper consumption and administrative effort.

Regular adjustments instead of price jumps

In future, Wiener Linien fares will be adjusted once a year based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This ensures that fares changes are regular and transparent, while helping to avoid larger price increases.

For the 2027 fares, the development of the Consumer Price Index between July 2025 and June 2026 serves as the basis for calculation. This results in an indexation rate of 3.45%.

Good to know

  • Existing annual passes will remain unchanged until their next renewal. The agreed price continues to apply for the current contract period.
  • Tickets already purchased will remain valid. They can continue to be used as usual for six months after the new fares come into effect.

The fare adjustment provides the foundation for ensuring that Vienna’s public transport system remains reliable, high-performing and attractive in the years ahead.

Frequently asked:

Why are Wiener Linien adjusting their fares?

Adjusting fares to reflect general price trends as of 1 January 2027, is necessary in order to safeguard the high standard of public transport in the long term. This helps avoid large, one-off price hikes.

What should I do with my unused tickets following a fare adjustment?

Tickets which have already been purchased remain valid for six months after the fare change takes effect and can be used as usual during this period. For 12 months following the effective date of the fare change, unused tickets may be returned for a refund (subject to a 10% deduction from the ticket value) or exchanged for a ticket of equal or higher value. In the case of an exchange, an additional payment to cover the new ticket price may be required.

Example: A ticket was purchased under the previous fare structure (valid until 31 December 2026), and a fare adjustment took place on 01 January 2027:

  • The ticket can be used until 30 June 2027.
  • Until 31 December 2027, the ticket can be exchanged for a ticket of equal or higher value or returned for a refund (subject to the deduction).

When will the price of my Annuall Pass increase?

The price for your Annual Pass will only increase when you next renew it. This means that Annual Passes are only affected by the price increase from 1 January 2027 onwards. Annual Passes valid until 1 December 2026 will be charged at the old price. The price will only increase when they are renewed.

Some tickets look different now. Why has the ticket layout changed?

The tickets have been redesigned in order to better combine functionality, clarity, and a modern appearance. Thanks to the bilingual design, passengers with no knowledge of German, in particular, benefit from improved orientation and easier use of the service.

Do tickets with the old layout need to be exchanged, or do they remain valid?

The change in layout does not affect the validity of the tickets. An exchange is not necessary.
