New fare structure effective from 1 January 2026: Wiener Linien secures its extensive public transport services for the long term

The public transport network has grown significantly in recent years, with additional lines and mobility services making the public transport offering more comprehensive than ever before. In order to maintain this high standard in the future, Wiener Linien will be adjusting its fare structure on 1 January 2026. Even after the adjustment, Vienna's public transport system will remain inexpensive by European standards while offering the most efficient network.

Public transport is the backbone of mobility in Vienna. Every day, trams, buses and underground trains transport around 2.4 million people safely, reliably and in a climate-friendly manner to their destinations. In recent years, Vienna has invested heavily in the expansion of its public transport network: new lines, modernised stations, additional bus and tram services, as well as WienMobil bikes and cars, make Vienna's mobility offering stronger than ever before.

In order to maintain this high level in the future, Wiener Linien will adjust its fare structure on 1 January 2026. The price of the annual ticket has not been increased since 2012, while energy prices, wages and operating costs have risen sharply. With the new fare structure, fares will be adjusted fairly and moderately. In order to be able to plan even better in the future, Wiener Linien and the City of Vienna have decided to revalue fares annually from 1 January 2027. This brings Wiener Linien into line with VOR and ÖBB.

Vienna's public transport network has massively grown since 2012
The Vienna public transport network has grown massively since 2012: 36 new and extended lines, 190 additional kilometres and almost 1,000 new stops have been created. In addition, new sharing services are now available with WienMobil.

That's why the adjustment is necessary:

👉🏻 The price of the annual pass was last adjusted in 2012 – 13 years ago. In the meantime, the public transport network has grown massively: 36 new and extended lines, 190 additional kilometres and almost 1,000 new stops have been added. Prices for food, energy and other living costs have risen sharply during this period, but the price of the annual ticket has remained unchanged.

👉🏻 In 2024 alone, the City of Vienna invested around one billion euros in the operation, maintenance and expansion of public transport.

👉🏻 The new fare structure ensures that the extensive public transport service can continue to be maintained at a high level in the future.

👉🏻 A comparison with other European cities shows that Vienna remains inexpensive even after the adjustment – and at the same time offers the most efficient public transport network.

Annual pass: equivalent to €1.26 per day in future

The annual pass remains the centrepiece of the offer. In future, the digital annual pass will cost €461.00, which corresponds to €1.26 per day for unlimited travel throughout the entire public transport network. This means that the new price remains well below the pure inflation rate over the last 13 years.**

Food prices up to twice as expensive – public transport prices unchanged for 13 years. While food prices have risen sharply since 2012, the price of an annual pass has remained unchanged for 13 years.

Cooking oil costs twice as much in 2025 as it did in 2012, milk has become 50 per cent more expensive, but the annual ticket has cost the same since 2012.
For €1.26, you can travel throughout Vienna on public transport for a whole day (based on the price of the digital annual pass) – with a car with combustion engine, you can only make two laps of the Ring.

New annual passes for young people and people with disabilities

In addition to the existing discounted annual pass for senior citizens, two new discounted annual passes will be available from 2026:

  • An annual pass for young people for everyone under the age of 26, regardless of education or occupation. It replaces the semester pass and fulfils a long-standing wish of many young passengers.
  • A special annual pass for people with disabilities

Both tickets will cost €300 per year and create fair, simple and permanently affordable offers.

Adjustment for short-term tickets and single tickets

As part of the adjustment, the fares for short-term tickets will also be adjusted moderately. From 1 January 2026, a single ticket will cost €3.20 and a discounted single ticket for children will cost €1.60. The 24-hour Vienna ticket will cost €10.20 and the 7-day Vienna ticket €28.90. The 31-day Vienna ticket will cost €75.00 in future.

To simplify the range of tickets on offer, the 48-hour and 72-hour tickets will be discontinued. The single ticket for senior citizens will also be discontinued.

Focus on digital tickets

Digital tickets will be cheaper than non-digital versions in future.

  • Short-term tickets and single tickets cost around 5% less in the online shop than the printed versions:
    • 1 journey Vienna online: €3.00 or €1.50 reduced
    • 24 hours Vienna online: €9.70
    • 7 days Vienna digital: €25.20
    • 31 days Vienna digital: €65.20
  • The annual ticket is also available in digital form: those who do without the plastic card pay €6 less for a year.

Surcharge for travelling without a valid ticket to increase

Travelling without a valid ticket is not a trivial offence. To make the system fairer, the surcharge is being increased. From 1 January, the surcharge will be €135 for immediate payment and €145 for payment by payment slip.

** According to the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO), cumulative inflation over the past 13 years has been around 37%. This means that an annual ticket should cost at least €502. The City of Vienna has decided to match this with a 27.85% increase in the price of the Klimaticket. The new price of the annual pass is thus significantly below the actual inflation adjustment.
