Tap+Ride: One tap and your journey begins

Starting May 28, 2026, getting around the city gets even easier. With Tap+Ride, Wiener Linien’s one-year pilot, buying a ticket is super simple: just tap once with your debit or credit card, phone, or smartwatch—and you’re good to go. Your payment method basically becomes your ticket.

Where to find Tap+Ride

You can currently use Tap+Ride at nine subway stations across Vienna:

  • Südtiroler Platz – Hauptbahnhof
  • Westbahnhof
  • Bahnhof Meidling
  • Stephansplatz
  • Schwedenplatz
  • Spittelau
  • Zieglergasse
  • Neubaugasse
  • Erdberg

The devices are located near ticket machines and are easy to spot thanks to the clearly marked Tap+Ride signage.

Get your ticket in seconds

Tap+Ride offers two ticket options:

  • Single ticket (Vienna core zone)
  • Reduced single ticket

Before tapping, you can use the touchscreen to select up to five tickets in one go.

Then simply tap your card or device. When you see the checkmark on the screen and hear the confirmation sound, you’re good to go. From that moment on, your payment method doubles as your valid ticket.

Smooth and simple ticket checks

Once you’ve tapped, you can start your journey right away. Your ticket is valid across all public transport within Vienna’s core zone.

If your ticket is checked, just present the payment method you used. The inspector’s device will verify your ticket via NFC - quick, seamless, and hassle-free.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Tap+Ride?

Tap+Ride is a new contactless way to buy public transport tickets in Vienna. Simply tap your credit or debit card – or a digital wallet on your phone or smartwatch – and you’re good to go.

How does Tap+Ride work?

Before you start your journey, hold your contactless payment method against a Tap+Ride device. A green check mark and a short beep confirm your purchase. Your card or device then acts as your ticket and can be checked during inspections.

Which tickets can I buy with Tap+Ride?

By default, a standard single ticket for Vienna is issued. You can also choose a discounted single ticket directly on the device.

Just make your selection on the touchscreen before tapping.

Important: If you don’t select anything and simply tap, a standard single ticket will be purchased automatically.

Can I buy tickets for other people?

Yes. You can select the number of tickets on the screen before you pay. If you tap straight away, one ticket will be issued.

Please note that each transaction can only include one ticket type. So you can either buy multiple standard tickets or multiple discounted tickets – but not a mix of both.

How do I buy a ticket for myself and my child or dog?

Start by tapping your card to buy your own ticket. Once you see the green check mark, begin a new transaction, select the discounted ticket option, and tap again to purchase a ticket for your child (ages 6–14) or your dog.

How do I know my ticket was purchased successfully?

You’ll see a green check mark on the screen and hear a short sound. That’s your confirmation – your ticket is valid and you can start your journey.

How can I get a receipt or view my trips?

You can view your trips and download receipts via the customer portal of Worldline Austria GmbH. You’ll need to create an account to access your records.

Where can I find Tap+Ride devices?

Tap+Ride is currently being tested at selected metro stations across Vienna. You’ll find the devices near ticket machines.

  • They are available at selected entrances at:
  • Erdberg
  • Westbahnhof
  • Zieglergasse
  • Neubaugasse
  • Südtiroler Platz – Hauptbahnhof
  • Stephansplatz
  • Schwedenplatz
  • Spittelau
  • Bahnhof Meidling

Are there any extra fees?

No. You only pay the regular Wiener Linien fare. (Please note: your bank may charge additional fees for currency conversion.)

What happens during a ticket inspection?

If you’re checked, simply present the card or device you used to pay. The inspector will scan it to confirm that you have a valid ticket.

What if I don’t have my payment method with me?

You need to carry your payment method with you during your journey. If you can’t present it during an inspection, you’ll be considered travelling without a valid ticket. It’s not possible to provide proof later.

If you’ve bought a ticket for someone else, they must travel with you for the entire journey.

Which payment methods are accepted?

All common contactless payment methods are supported, including:

  • Credit and debit cards (e.g. Visa, Mastercard)
  • Smartphones with Apple Pay or Google Pay
  • Smartwatches with a linked payment method

Do I need to tap out when I leave?

No. Tap+Ride works with standard single tickets, so there’s no need to tap out. Just tap before your journey and you’re set.

Which transport services can I use?

Tap+Ride is valid across all public transport services within Vienna’s core zone – including underground, trams and buses.
