At a WienMobil Station, Wiener Linien integrate the core offering of public transportation with additional mobility services. At a WienMobil station, you can easily switch between bicycles, scooters, car-sharing vehicles, and public transportation, or charge your own electric vehicle.

In Öffi-Denkwerkstatt, all interested passengers and those who wish to become so can collaborate with Wiener Linien to shape the future of public transportation. There are various interactive formats where your opinions and ideas are sought after. From climate protection to passenger information systems, infrastructure, and vehicles – we are interested in what matters to you!

Tap+Ride is a new contactless way to buy public transport tickets in Vienna. Simply tap your credit or debit card or a digital wallet on your phone or smartwatch and you’re good to go.

BUSINESSBike is the WienMobil Rad bike sharing solution for the B2B sector. The company provides its employees 60 minutes per journey free of charge.

Ticket machines are available at all subway stations and on every tram.

That depends on which line you mean. Vienna has one of the densest public transport networks in the world with the shortest intervals. 96% of Vienna's residents already live within the public transport catchment area, no more than 300 metres from the nearest bus or tram stop and no more than 500 metres from an underground or suburban railway station. In thinly populated areas, our lines cannot run as frequently as in more central locations for economic reasons.

We work with the City of Vienna to respond to urban development on an ongoing basis. Furthermore our lines are continuously evaluated through passenger counts and on-site observations. We adjust the intervals and operating hours as necessary. Deviations from the timetable can result in irregular departures and longer waiting times at short notice.

You can use the mobility services directly through the mobility providers. This means you simply need to register online with the respective providers and provide your payment details to access the service.

Before you start your journey, hold your contactless payment method against a Tap+Ride device. A green check mark and a short beep confirm your purchase. Your card or device then acts as your ticket and can be checked during inspections.

The job ticket can be conveniently ordered and managed via the Business Portal.

Mobility in companies is an essential and important lever for a climate-neutral city, which is why Wiener Linien supports the City of Vienna in achieving its climate and mobility targets.

Wiener Linien's mobility experts have been working on this topic since 2018 and are passing on their expertise to interested companies.

Mobile ticket machines are installed in every tram.

If you purchase the ticket at a slightly higher price on the tram, you must purchase it immediately after boarding at the ticket machine. Depending on the type of machine, you may need to validate the ticket again. Pay attention to the imprint 'Bitte entwerten' ('Please validate').

By default, a standard single ticket for Vienna is issued. You can also choose a discounted single ticket directly on the device. Just make your selection on the touchscreen before tapping.
Important: If you don’t select anything and simply tap, a standard single ticket will be purchased automatically.

Yes, you can select the number of tickets on the screen before you pay. If you tap straight away, one ticket will be issued.
Please note that each transaction can only include one ticket type. So you can either buy multiple standard tickets or multiple discounted tickets but not a mix of both.

The following information are required to create a timetable: line route, journey time between all stops, compensation times at the final stops and vehicle size. Depending on demand at different times of the day and on different days of the week, as well as the most important connections, the intervals, operating hours and departure times are determined accurate to the second.

The new user interface was developed in close collaboration with UX experts, with the goal of creating a system that is both user-friendly and accessible. Passenger needs – such as quick ticket access and easily findable fare information – were specifically considered. Together with customers, areas for improvement were identified and implemented. The result is an interface that is not only functional and intuitive but also meets the diverse needs of our passengers.

All upcoming events can be found in the Öffi-Denkwerkstatt section of your user profile. You will receive an email notification when new events are released that may be of interest to you. If you do not see any events in your account, either none are currently available or your profile does not match our upcoming topics or questions. However, there is no need to worry, as there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to participate.

After a successful purchase via our WienMobil App or the WienMobil Ticketshop, you will receive two separate emails at the email address you provided:

Please keep the email containing your ticket, as you can use it to access your e-ticket at any time.

We always welcome ideas and suggestions for improving public transportation. Just write to us via our contact form.

There are various reasons why the scheduled route is changed:

  • In the event of major operational disruptions that prevent vehicles from continuing their journey, there are short-haul options on every line to maintain service on part of the line and restore the timetable and planned intervals. This also allows our drivers to adhere to their working hours and break times.
  • The vehicles used on rail and road must first travel from the depot or garage to the first or final stop of the line. After their shift, the vehicles return to the depot or garage again. It makes sense to transport passengers during those rides before turning towards the depot. These return journeys are usually carried out between the scheduled intervals.

All participants will receive a Wiener Linien goodie at the end as a thank you for their time and commitment. There is no payment involved.

Our passenger numbers are continuously evaluated to determine the utilisation of our lines. All new vehicles are equipped with electronic counting devices above each door. In addition, manual passenger counts are carried out. Connections also play an important role in planing an interval.

An example: If a tram line connects to an underground line that runs every 5 minutes at weekends, it makes sense for the tram to run every 10 minutes to ensure good connections.

Furthermore the minimum frequency of public transport services is specified in a contract between the City of Vienna and Wiener Linien for each mode of transport at all times of the day. So basic public transport services are provided even at times of low demand or in decentralised areas. Wiener Linien is committed to the economical use of operating resources and personnel, which is why minimum intervals can only be reduced once defined utilisation values have been exceeded regularly.

An example: Due to the high demand, the underground lines run every 2.5 to 3.75 minutes during the morning rush hour. These values refer to the total utilisation within a 30-minute period and not to a single journey. A vehicle could very easily fall above the specified threshold, for example, due to the end of the school day at a secondary school.

The 4-Quadrant Mode is a special operating mode for people with visual impairments. It is activated via the eye symbol in the top right corner of the interface. Once activated, navigation is done using arrows in the four corners of the screen or by tapping the buttons. Each interaction is read aloud – from ticket selection to payment. Tactile markers located next to the screen corners help blind and visually impaired users identify the navigation points and guide them safely through the purchase process.

With a guest purchase via our WienMobil App or the WienMobil Ticketshop, no registration is required. You only need a valid email address to which your tickets and invoice will be sent. With a logwien account, you benefit from additional features: you can access your purchased tickets at any time, save your payment methods for future purchases, and speed up the checkout process.

Depending on the provider, there are various payment methods available for using the mobility services.

Navigation has been made significantly more intuitive, allowing you to reach your desired ticket more quickly and easily. Fare information is presented transparently: each ticket includes a “Learn more” button that provides additional details. Throughout the purchase process, contextual hints are displayed to guide you step by step. A new shopping cart feature allows you to combine up to three different ticket types and a total of seven tickets in one transaction. Overall, the ticket purchase process is now simpler, clearer, and more convenient.

All timetables are available on our website and are displayed at all stops.

The WienMobil app shows the next departure times for all stops under the menu item ‘Lines’.

Depending on the station, various mobility partners are involved. The fixed components of a WienMobil Station are WienMobil Rad and WienMobil Auto. Details for each station can be found in the WienMobil app and here.

There is generally a separate timetable for: school days, holidays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

A timetable is permanently adjusted if the route, journey time between stops, operating hours, vehicle size or demand change. Another reason is to coordinate with other lines.

The timetable can also be changed temporarily. On some days, special timetables are used on certain lines. For example, during events (concerts, football matches, bathing season, etc.) or during modernisation measures. On these days, the regular timetable is suspended.

The Europe-wide railway timetable change in December has little impact on Wiener Linien. We only adjust our lines at this time if connections to the S-Bahn are affected.

We make sure that the low-floor trams are distributed as evenly as possible across the Viennese network. Unfortunately, traffic accidents, illegal parking or a broken train can cause the sequence of the trains to change. This can increase the intervals between the low-floor trams.

In principle, construction sites are planned in such a way that there is little to no impact on passengers' usual routes. For this reason, many track construction sites are carried out at night and larger construction projects are carried out during the holiday season. However, depending on the circumstances, normal operations may have to be restricted because sections of the road or track are no longer passable. In bus operations, this usually leads to small-scale diversions due to the greater flexibility. In tram and underground operations, depending on the spatial conditions and existing track connections, entire sections of lines may have to be closed, and replacement measures planned.

Separate construction timetables are drawn up during the construction work. These timetables include the changed route with journey times, the adjusted intervals and the operating hours. This enables stable and scheduled operation even when conditions change, and drivers can take reliable breaks and work shifts based on the prepared duty roster.

Each vehicle transmits its position at regular intervals. This information is used to calculate the distance and travel time to the bus stop. If the position of our vehicles does not change, the distance to the bus stop does not change and the minutes on the display remain the same. Reasons for this could be increased traffic, an accident or someone parking illegally. If the delay lasts longer, a service disruption will be announced on the affected line.

Each line has only one stop where optimal transfer options can be taken into account. This is usually where most passengers change trains. The timetable at the other stops along the rest of the route is therefore determined by this.

We generally run very frequent intervals during the day, which means that transfer times are usually only a few minutes. On lines with longer intervals or during evening and night-time service, connections are coordinated according to priority.

It is not possible to offer all conceivable connections in the form of direct lines. Direct connections often represent inefficient parallel traffic to other lines. Public transport should be viewed as a mass transport system for the entire population, which is why individual wishes cannot be taken into account.

There is only a limited number of seats available for the events. Therefore, it is important that you register and receive a confirmation from us. This way, we can plan the events effectively. Your comprehensive profile information helps us to find workshops and interactive formats that are interesting for you.

This is because the transition to the new user interface is happening gradually. Older machines are being replaced step by step with new ticket machines.

There are numerous reasons why vehicles are fuller. During the morning rush hour, all available vehicles are in service. The simultaneous start of schools in Vienna leads to a very high volume of passengers in a very short period of time. Public transport can also very easily be fuller than planned due to delays. If there is a delay on a line, a vehicle has to take on more passengers than planned.

Our routes are continuously evaluated through passenger counts and on-site observations. If necessary, we adjust the intervals to have more vehicles in service on a route. However, it must be considered that there is only a limited number of staff and vehicles, which must be distributed as evenly as possible and as needed across the entire city and route network.

Here is an example: at busy intersections, a delay of only 30 seconds can result in 80 additional passengers waiting at the stop. Delays can occur very quickly: for example, a door is held open for additional passengers and the vehicle misses the green phase at the traffic lights. When more people than usual are waiting at the next stop, the passenger change takes longer. This continues until the public transport is extremely crowded.

But how can the delay be made up? We are prepared for precisely such cases and allow for a so-called ‘compensation time’ at the final stops so that the next service can depart on time in the event of delays. Insider information: some lines even have a scheduled waiting time on their route to compensate for delays and reestablish regularity.

The timetable shows the planned stops for boarding and alighting at specified times.

There are various reasons why the planned timetable is not always kept:

Sometimes there are technical difficulties, sometimes delays. However, in surface transport, there are many disruptive factors due to mixed traffic with other road users. These include incidents such as accidents or illegally parked vehicles, which can completely disrupt the timetable. But even shorter delays, for example due to emergency vehicles, garbage trucks or inattentive drivers, can lead to significant deviations from the timetable due to the ever-increasing time required for passengers to board and alight.
