According to international surveys Vienna is one of the cities with highest quality of life worldwide. An important factor therefor is the high quality of public transport network. Wiener Linien operates about 120 lines of undergrounds, buses and trams. They not only keep the city moving, they also shape the image of the city.
Wiener Linien GmbH &Co KG is a 100 percent subsidiary of Wiener Stadtwerke Holding AG. It is therefore in the direct ownership of the City of Vienna. An efficient local public transport decreases the traffic on the roads, and is a prerequisite for rapid progress in trade.
Wiener Linien pursues clear objectives in order to consistently increase its share of the total traffic of the city. Wiener Linien also takes responsibility for the safety of passengers, the environment - and as one of the largest employers in Vienna- also for the welfare of its employees. For the reliable and timely supply of public transport nearly 8,300 employees of Wiener Linien do their best 24/7.
In 2011 Wiener Linien achieved a new passenger record with almost 875 million passengers. On average, around 2,4 million passengers use Wiener Linien per day. The public transport service is the quickest, greenest and most economical mode of transportation. Each day, vehicles of Wiener Linien cover a distance of 180,000 kilometers, nearly the same distance as orbiting the earth 4.5 times per day. Already 37 percent of all trips in the capital are made by public transport. Undergrounds, buses and trams are therefor ahead of cars.
This percentage is going to increase in the future, due to consistent development of the public transport network. The Viennese underground network is, since its last expansion in 2010, about 75 kilometers long. By 2019 the underground lines U1, U2 will be further extended, and the extension of the undergroud line U2 to the urban development area of Seestadt Aspern, in the district of Donaustadt, is already in progress. Once finished, it will only take 20 minutes from the north-eastern districts of Vienna to the inner City!
Wiener Linien also invests in the expansion of the tram network and new vehicles. Over the next years Wiener Linien orders new undergrounds, ultra-low-floor-trams and modern buses. All of them will be air-conditioned.
