The Vienna Tram Museum

The Viennese Tramway Museum was established in 1986 and hosts a comprehensive collection of vehicles of the tramway-, light rail- and bus operation which are of historical and technical importance.
Next to 100 original vehicles which are displayed at the moment, we offer an extensive technical documentation like pictures, drawings and documents that are permanently edited for presentation.
The vehicles displayed are a treat for all visitors - non-professionals or specialists:
- A horse tram built in 1868
- A steam train set built in 1885/86
- As well as the whole range of electronically operated tramway- & light rail carriages for passenger transportation as well as technical support from 1901 to 1969.
The bus collection consists of vehicles built in 1949 to 1978: motor busses, double decker busses and articulated busses.
The museum is hosted in the former depot “Erdberg” and consists of 4 halls on 7,500 m². The vehicles are displayed on 1,810m tracks.
Therefore, the Viennese Tramway Museum is the biggest tramway museum in the world, which exclusively documents the history of public transport of one city: Vienna.
Nearly all vehicles are maintained for operation permanently and can therefore used for special events. Because of this it is necessary to service the vehicle in an in-house workshop which can be found in hall I (Halle I) on 900m² with 232m in-house tracks.
The Viennese Tramway Museum is open from the beginning of May to the beginning of October each year on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from 10:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs.
On some weekends we offer special events during the season. During these days we offer special activities like excursions on rarely used vehicles or activities for children on a tram especially redesigned for kids.
